Dear Diary, "Jerseys" is not a theme

Riff Raff, our inspiration.
For some reason, the fraternity men on my campus think that "Jerseys" is a suitable theme for a date party function. No just any function, but all of them. Bid Day date parties used to be nice events where the girls got to throw on their favorite semi formal dress and take cute pictures with their dapper dates. Unfortunatley, those days are long behind us. We now don gigantic jerseys, cutoff shorts and converse while our dates look like they rolled straight off the set of that one episode of Gossip Girl where Chuck plays basketball. It's one of the trashiest things our Greek system does.
Happier, classier times of Bid Day's past.
I hate jerseys, I hate the jersey theme, and I refuse to wear them as a personal form of rebellion. Last year I wore a romper to one fraternity's date party cause I was going with the president and therefore considered myself the first lady of the date party.
The next night me and my friends went to a different bid day date party in our own "jerseys" as Team Miley (this was before the 2013 VMA's) so I wore a tank top, tulle skirt and glitter hairspray.
This year I opted for a hand-painted tank top that says "jerseys are for chasing" and my phone in my running armband. It wasn't an ideal bid day outfit, but it was comfortable. Thank goodness my date has weathered many date parties with me and my eccentric costumes and didn't even raise an eyebrow when I told him I was going rogue.

Dear Diary, wrapping up with Bid Day 2014

This is one of my last posts on The Endless Diary. It's been over a year and I've loved getting to get a feel for the blogosphere and learning a few things about being a blogger. It is my senior year though and I'm already beginning to feel disconnected from the sorority world. So I started a new blog, Style by Sophie that focuses more on fashion and hopefully can carry me past graduation.

Here are a few Insta pics from my chapter's bid day in August. This year we got 85 of the cutest, smartest girls on campus and we couldn't be more proud! I am also quite proud of how the t-shirts turned out, everyone looked great! Bid day is one of the happiest days of the year and I am so glad I got to experience it one last time as an active.

Dear Diary, it's Monogram Monday!

Last week my article in our all-Greek newspaper here on campus was on monogramming - you can read it online here! You'll find tips, guidelines and fun facts about the best way to mark something as yours. Below is some monogram inspiration from my personal collection... you know what they say- if it's not moving, monogram it!

How-to: Move out of your sorority house or dorm

Moving is right up there with taxes and finals - miserable and unavoidable. Over the course of my college career, I've moved either in or out of my sorority house or dorm no fewer than 12 times. The past 8 times I've been moving everything I own; at my chapter we are lucky enough to change rooms every semester, but that means we have to clear out everything from our old rooms and take it home. Packing is annoying, stressful and overwhelming- a terrible thing to do after taking your finals. But here are a twenty tips and tricks I've picked up along the way, hopefully it'll make your moving experience a bit less stressful this year!

1. Plan to pack when your roommate isn't. I learned this lesson the hard way freshmen year. Trying to pack at the same time as your roommate is the epitome of chaos. Y'all's stuff is already mixed together, trying to pack that way actually makes it worse. Plus the room you're sharing is probably closet-sized so you'll have even less room. If you are lucky enough to have suite-style living it might not be as bad, but the hallways get cluttered and dangerous quickly!

2. Pack a bag. If you're going to arrive home late or tired and won't be unloading everything that day, pack a little overnight bag with your necessities so you're not digging around for your toothbrush and a clean pair of underwear!

3. Keep all your chargers and electronics in your backpack. This is immensely helpful because everything is together, easily accessible and in a location that makes sense- not crammed in the side of a duffle or inside a coffee cup!

4. Use clear, stackable boxes. This way you can see exactly whats inside. Writing down everything you put inside as you go and then taping the list in the lid of the box is extremely helpful as well.

5. Toss all your shoes in a bag. My favorite kind of bag to use for shoes are the plastic reusable totes because if there is any dirt on your shoes it doesn't ruin a good bag! Plus they fold up easily for storage when you're done.

6. Get some use out of your boots. Boots are big, bulky and take up a lot of room in your car (and closet!). My advice is to store odds and ends in the shaft of the boot. For example, I usually keep my umbrellas in my rain boots! For moving this year I also used them to hold shoes that didn't quite fit in my shoe tote.

7. Buy a belt hanger. I use a style from The Container Store (because my big does too) and it's life changing. For your belts that can't be hung, tuck them into your purses!

8. Store little purses in big purses. This way you only have to grab a few big bags and don't have to worry about all the messy straps

9. Have some extra, sturdy paper bags on hand. Having a few bags left from purchases really comes in handy for all the odds and ends you may come up with when you're winding down the packing. If you don't end up needing them you can just drop them in the recycling bin!

10. Don't be afraid to toss things! Have a trash can or box near by when you start packing. Old papers, broken necklaces or any general trash should be discarded immediately so its out of the way.

11. Strip your bed last. This way if you end up taking longer than you planned to pack, you can just go to sleep and finish in the morning. Driving when you're tired is really dangerous, even more so if you're like me and tend to cry as you're driving down the interstate away from your sisters, your college and another semester of fun.

12. Keep your bedding's original packaging. If your comforter, blankets or sheets come in a reusable package keep it! It serves as a convenient way to pack up these otherwise awkward bedding items, plus most packaging is designed to move the item in its most condensed size- perfect for moving!

13. Store as much as possible. Each chapter has its own rules on extended holiday storage. if your chapter allows it and you're moving back in just a few months- leave what you can there. This includes big items like wall art, chairs, decorations or anything you won't use over the break. Just be sure to put your name on everything!

14. Find/bribe/date a boy who will help you move your boxes. Be prepared when he arrives and reward him afterwards. It's hard work but can be done in half the time with an extra set of (strong) arms!

15. Load big things first. This is the rule anytime you're loading up a car. Stack your boxes, lamps or anything else over-sized first, then pack everything else in around it. They don't say large and in charge for nothing.

16. Use a bar. Hanging clothes travel best when well, hanging. Most stores like Target or Walmart carry a bar that extends from one side of your car to the other, clipping into the dry-cleaning hooks.

17. Use caution when carrying hanging clothes. When carrying your hanging clothes,  don't carry too many, don't try to hold anything else, and don't mix normal hangers with weird hangers. the end result would be dropping, slipping and possibly falling on your way out the door. If you have clip hangers, a belt/scarf hanger, or anything in a dry cleaning or garment bag, carry those separately

18. Load bedding last. Toss your pillows, blankets and comforters in last. They're soft and can squish into any remaining crevice left in your car.

19. Don't forget your shower caddy! It's one of the most common things to forget because its out of sight and out of mind down the hall in the bathroom. If this is your last experience living in a communal bathroom and don't foresee using a shower caddy in the future- toss it. You'll probably not have a need for it and they get pretty gross.

20. Stay hydrated. Seriously, don't forget to take a break every once and a while to have a sip of water and a bite of a granola bar. Moving is a marathon- not a race!

Tip for the future: Take as much home as possible before moving out. conveniently , there are holidays usually within weeks of finals week. In the fall its Thanksgiving and in the spring its Easter. Use these trips home to your advantage- take anything you won't use those last few weeks home so you wont have to worry about them later. This Easter I took home my formal dresses, winter coats and all my sweaters. Oklahoma weather is ever-changing but I was sure I wouldn't need all my gear in early May!

Dear Diary, the Canadian Greeks are starting something big

The Get Real Movement
This video fell into my browser yesterday because TSM posted it, and it's worth the watch. Greeks at the University of Western Ontario (who knew there were Greeks in Canada?) took a big step towards shattering homophobic notions among fraternity and sorority stereotypes. They worked with The Get Real Movement, whose aim is to stop discrimination and homophobia, starting with small communities, like ours. Well our community is hardly small, there are over nine million Greeks nationwide! This video is powerful and reminds both insiders and outsiders that Greek life is all about friendship, scholarship and service no matter your orientation, ethnicity, race or any other factor. You won't ever be weak if you go Greek!

Dear Diary, by popular request - my metallic temporary tattoos

Date parties are the perfect time to try out new things, be it a new fashion trend, a costume piece, or a cute new guy! This past weekend I opted for trying something that falls between a costume accessory and a (hopefully) rising trend: metallic temporary tattoos. I'm a huge fan of temporary tattoos because it's a fun way to be someone else for the day - and get to scrub it off later! Impulse decisions are perfectly safe:)

A few months ago I stumbled across Flash Tattoos on Pinterest (check out my new Endless Diary account here!). I became obsessed with these glittering tattoos. Purchasing them for the annual toga date party was a must because a true Greek goddess isn't complete without her jewelry, but I was always too afraid to wear any in case anything got lost. But there was no way of loosing these, and they looked amazing.

I got so many compliments and questions about them - I knew I had to share it with the world! Luckily I didn't use my whole pack this weekend and can't wait for the next occasion to wear them.

Dear Diary, it's toga time

One of my favorite social events of the year has finally arrived - Lambda Chi's Foga (foam+toga) date party. Personally, I hate the foam but it's worth it to get to saunter around in togas all night like the Greeks that we are.

Each year when this event rolls around, the freshmen freak, the boys stock up, and the Hobby Lobby workers can look at you and know exactly how much fabric you need for your toga. There are several ways to go about dressing yourself for this event, but the two best choices are using a pillow case, or buying a piece of fabric from your local craft store. The pillow case is more practical - it' won't budge, fall apart (or off) and is very simple to make. All you need is a king sized pillow case, scissors, and some rope for your belt. Simply cut the corner of the pillow case off at an angle, then cut an arm hole, try it on for size, tie your belt and you're done!
Now if you want to go the more traditional route, like me, I would check out this video. It's the easiest to understand and all the options are cute (except the bikini option - you'd be better off in an actual bikini and sarong). Most girls need about two yards of fabric and three yards for boys.
Quick Toga Tutorial
Last year I bought a faux flower vine from the floral department and hot glued it together, making a really cute crown. Other people have used gold wire or just leafy vines and both look great. I advise considering your skin tone, hair color, likelihood of spilling a drink on yourself and what colors your best friends are wearing before selecting your toga color. You'll be taking pictures all night and want to look your best! This is one of the few times when selecting clothing that color is pretty much the only variable so choose wisely!

No matter what you put on your body, make sure you are covered up underneath with spandex shorts and some kind of nude bralette or bandeau because if your costume falls apart- you don't want to accidentally put on a show!

Dear Diary, the perfect pairing - a Jack Rogers+Chubbies giveaway!

I love a good giveaway contest, especially when when it's one of my favorite brands! Jack Rogers, the quintessential summer sandal company has paired with Chubbies, the southern men's short shorts company. The contest is a His + Hers Giveaway, with the winner receiving a pair of Jack Rogers Sandals (for her) and a pair of Chubbies Shorts (for him).

These things are essential for any college student's warm weather wardrobe! I think that the contest is aimed at cute preppy couples, but since the most important man in my life is the Sonic employee who gets my large half strawberry/half cranberry limeade easy ice no rinds drink right, it's a good thing I have a brother who can enter with me. Never heard of Chubbies? Their company has declared that pants are a necessary evil at best and everyone should spend as much time in shorts as possible, and thus have crafted their version of the perfect mens shorts. My brother is a huge fan of the brand and owns lord knows how many pairs... you can check out their brand here! Unfamiliar with Jack Rogers? Here is a link to their website. I hope your boyfriend isn' the jealous type because it won't take long to fall in love!

Dear diary, check out this cute company!

This cute new company called The Lettered Company reached out to me last week. I checked them out and it's a fresh jewelry company started by a Kappa Kappa Gamma alumna out of Washington D.C.

They make rings, necklaces, lavalieres, and earrings. Currently their only ready-made stuff is KKG, but special orders can be made for your sorority. Right now our chapter has an open custom order for Chi Omega lavaliere's, so if you're interested please let me know! They are $22 each and come in gold and silver. Here is a link to their website so you can check them out yourself!

Dear Diary, the First Week of Being T-Shirt Chair, a poem

An original poem by Sophie Orlich

The first week of classes,
Might move like molasses.
But if you’re the t-shirt chair,
You’re losing your hair!
Date party shirts,
Come with opinion quirks.
You can’t make everyone happy,
Even the dates were getting sassy!
Winter gear is fun I guess,
But the deadlines are longer than the rest (1/26).
Licensing laws are a new thorn in my side,
Why can't you just let some things slide?
A surprise order you need in less than a week?
It feels like I’m up a creek!
But wait, I’ve got to attend classes too?
And work a part time job?! (I need money- it’s true!)
Don’t even get me started on the mess I was left,
Organization certainly was not kept.
Thankfully my assistant rocks,
And is on board to get ChiO socks!
Meetings, retreats, passouts and planning,
This job takes a fair amount of manning.
But I know I’m in for a treat,

Because I cant imagine a job more sweet!

Dear Diary, here’s to the Fifty Nifty United States

A little wreath I made for our door
Our last date party of the season was this past weekend and we paired with the ladies of Pi Beta Phi to put on this state-themed event. After months of back and fourth on the theme, we finally settled on ‘Fifty Nifty United States’ from the song many of us were taught in elementary school as a way to remember all the US state names.
Everyone picked a state and dressed as something famous from that state. Some of the costumes we saw were so creative! I loved that everyone really got into the theme and came up with such cute things. A few of my favorites include: the Kentucky Derby, grapes from Napa, old people from Florida, a lone star from Texas, Harley Davidson from Michigan, the Gossip Girl cast from New York, a deer and a hunter from Oklahoma, and the devil from Georgia.

I did not take a date because as social chair, I am responsible for everything running smoothly which sometimes running all over the place, therefore leaving my date all by his lonesome. I took a date to our first date party of my term and saw him for maybe fifteen minuets all night and I just felt terrible about it. So from then on my mom was my date (no, I’m not kidding) and I loved it! Then all I had to worry about was my mother being scarred from experiencing date parties from the inside, but she was social chair when she was here so she never is too shocked.
Are we in NYC?
Because I was flying solo and sober that meant the sky was the limit for my costume. So I decided to represent my favorite city, NYC, with a taxi and the iconic I heart NY logo. I did this by cutting out the letters on felt and pinning them to my black leotard. For the taxi I bought a box from the local Norman box store, cut it up, painted it yellow then decorated it. The stripes on the side are made from white duct tape with black card stock squares glued to them. The wheels are silver glitter scrapbook paper over black glitter paper. It was weird wearing a box all night, but it was nice to have a very distinct personal space bubble though.
All in all it was a great date party and everyone told me that they so much fun. I mean what more can you ask for? The new officers will be selected this Sunday so I’m passing off the reins to the next lucky gal to take my seat… it sure has been a fun ride!
Missed the 'Fifty Nifty' reference? This video should explain it all.
